The Google Nexus One

January 13, 2010

Released on January 5, 2010, the Google Nexus was a major surprise in the phone industry. It runs the newly developed Google Android 2.1 (Eclair) operating system with unique features such as live wallpaper. Once a Google Nexus user gets their phone, they can access the vast Android market of 20,000+ applications of all types. Lately, applications for the Android OS have quickly increased as developers see the system as a potential target for phone-buyers. You can also save lots of money by purchasing a 2-year unlimited plan for the Nexus, totaling $2,448.76, a much cheaper solution than the iPhone’s $3,799 two year contract. Hardware-wise, the Nexus One is also a good choice. It features a Snapdragon processor, capable of playing high-frame-rate video very well. For connectivity, it boasts a GPS receiver, Bluetooth 2.1, and powerful 802.11n-capable hardware. (though it is enabled for only 802.11b/g) Possibly one of the most attractive features of the Nexus however, is the 5.0 megapixel auto-focus camera, complete with LED flash and digital zoom. And 5 megapixels is all most consumers will need, keeping into mind that only a few years ago, 5 megapixel cameras were hundreds of dollars. When it comes to modern smartphones, many have touchscreens. The touchscreen accuracy varies on each device though. So watch the touch accuracy before you buy, as an inaccurate touchscreen can ruin your entire smartphone experience. Here’s a small diagram comparing the most popular touch-phones.

Touchscreen Accuracy

The Google Nexus compares favorably with other smartphones.

Overall, the Google Nexus One is a great smartphone to have, despite its enormous costs. The open-source system that Nexus integrates is a must-have that may define all phones in the future. By getting the Nexus One, you too can step into the future.
